Trick-or-treating in NYC is pretty different (and pretty cool) for kids because let’s face it, there’s way more candy to collect! Instead of visiting the same houses within a one block radius like most suburban kids, NYC kids are able to visit all the apartments in their high rise – sometimes we’re talking 12 apartment per floor, with 30 floors total! And New Yorkers make this experience pretty special for kids (and parents!).
Most buildings and floors are decked out with decorations, smoke machines, eyeballs hanging from the ceilings, and spooky sound machines with ghosts enticing you to knock on doors. You never know what you’re going to encounter when that elevator door opens! And here’s the perk for parents: they get to peek inside apartments they have been curious about all year (yes, we know you were wondering about neighbor Jane’s gorgeous water-views and art collector Peter’s personal pieces). Plus, parents get excited for the free handouts too (GLASSES OF WINE). It’s a win-win for little ones and grownups alike.
In the elevators, kids get to see the costumes that other kiddos are wearing, and parents have time to catch up with friends as they go from floor to floor. It can get pretty packed, but that’s all part of the fun. When kids fill up their orange pumpkin buckets, they can conveniently drop them off at their apartment and go in search of even more candy!
Businesses in NYC always join in on the fun. Sometimes streets and avenues are closed so everyone can gather and march down the city streets together in search of new sugary rushes for their palates. Everything from the local delis to the chain CVS’s on every corner is fair game in terms of soliciting the most popular candy—Crunch bars, Snickers, and Reese’s pieces.
Big bonus if you live by a Dylan’s Candy Bar—in fact, it might be worth the subway ride.
