Mikey has been singing, acting, and dancing since she was a little girl, whether it was putting on backyard performances or singing at her day camp. While her dream is to be on stage, she has always had a passion for working with young kids, because at heart she still considers herself to be one! Apart from her theatrical desires, she is also a huge sports fan who loves football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball! Mikey is based in NYC but also loves traveling, and has been to several exotic locations with Curated Care families. Learn more about Mikey and her experience as a travel sitter in our interview below.
Hi Mikey! Where are you from and what brought you to NYC?
Hello friends! I am Westchester born and raised. I specifically grew up in Chappaqua, NY which is just 40 minutes north of the city on Metro North. I moved to NYC in 2015, just 3 days after I graduated high school, to pursue my dream of Musical Theater. I studied and worked at a 2-year musical conservatory called AMDA – American Musical and Dramatic Academy. I graduated in October of 2016, and have been auditioning and still studying in NY ever since.
What is your experience with kids? Can you share a story?
I have always loved working with kids. I am the youngest of 3 girls, so growing up, many of my sister’s friends would come to babysit and we would have the best time! I was so excited to one day be a babysitter myself! My first experience with kids was during my sophomore year of high school; my school ran a preschool for children between the ages of 3-5 years old. In the class, our time was split between an academic portion where we learned about the growth and development of children’s minds and how their world is shaped right before their eyes. We also focused on why it is so important to provide a loving and safe environment for a child at such a young age and how certain factors and influences can be either positive or detrimental to a child’s growth. Thanks to this course, I was connected to many of the children’s parents and in-turn began babysitting for a few of the kids after school. From there my high school babysitting career took off! In one of my more recent sitting adventures, I was able to infiltrate my musical theater capabilities into the session.
You currently have traveled with several families on Curated Care. What places did you travel to and how was it?
My first travel trip was to Aspen, Colorado. I was solely responsible for three kiddos. I was up early to help in the mornings, drove the kids and parents to ski school/the respective slopes, had some time off in the afternoon, and then was back on duty in the evenings to assist with dinner and bedtime. A fun trip was just a few weeks ago for spring break. A fairly new family reached out via Curated Care and asked me to join them on a trip to the Bahamas with their 2 little nuggets! We had lots of fun by the pool, hanging out in the kids club, and even got to go on a boat ride for a day with a friend of the family. Similar to all my travel trips, I was up in the early morning when the kids woke up to assist with breakfast etc., played during the day, had some time off in the afternoon, and finally helped out (the most) in the evenings with dinner and bedtime. The whole trip was so fun! I would definitely do it again.
For families looking to book Travel Sitters, what are some tips for finding the right one?
My first suggestion to finding the right travel sitter would definitely be making sure there is a strong connection with the sitter and the kiddos. To get fully acclimated, I recommend parents schedule a few bookings so the Kid Expert can form a bond with the little ones so all parties are comfortable by the time of the vacay. My next tip would be making sure the Kid Expert is up for traveling with families. Travel situations can sometimes be a stressful process. Ask questions like: Is this sitter comfortable and easy going in high-stress situations? Have they traveled before with their own family? Are they comfortable being on a plane or in a car? Some other questions to ask would be:
- Does this sitter have a driver’s license and/or a valid passport?
- Do they feel comfortable driving if needed?
- Can they swim? Can they assist children with swimming?
- Do they have TSA precheck? (some families do some families do not)
What do you think is the benefit of hiring a Kid Expert vs a traditional babysitter?
The benefit of hiring a Kid Expert is simple! Quality. With a Kid Expert, families are guaranteed a very personable, refreshingly fun, responsible, reliable, and accountable person. You can count on all of these things, while also ensuring your child will constantly be entertained and learning.
What are you most looking forward to in the future?
Now that I have been on a few trips, I am excited to continue traveling. I hope to explore new places with new families!
