With the frosty air upon us, it’s a perfect time to step inside a cozy NYC bookstore and browse the oak-colored shelves for a good book for you or your kiddos. NYC still boasts some 30-40 independent bookstores, and the children’s sections in these stores are filled with magic, ready to inspire the tiniest readers with heroic characters and enchanting lands. Here are some of our favorite bookstores in New York City:

1. Book Culture

This adorable Upper West Side bookstore feels like it’s right out of a movie! Hardwood floors and book-stacked tables add the perfect atmosphere to this split-level bookstore on Columbus Avenue. Book Culture has two additional locations but this one feels like pure magic for little ones (and adults!) with an entire floor dedicated to children’s literature and a sizeable playspace.

2. Books of Wonder

This is a one-of-a-kind bookstore in NYC – solely dedicated to children’s books. Books of Wonder has been around since 1980 and has books for infants through young adulthood. They also carry a unique collection of rare and out of print children’s books and original artwork from notable children’s book illustrators. Come for the books, stay for the art!

3. Strand Bookstore

Old New York at it’s best, Strand Bookstore opened in 1927 and boasts 18-miles of books. It has 5 floors of books (!!!) and a cool rare books room. On the 2^nd floor, the children’s area is large with rows of tall bookshelves, holding hundreds of middle grade and teen novels, and the back corner holds hundreds of books for younger children. This is a great bookstore to pick up a classic children’s story or the latest teen sensation.

4. Greenlight Bookstore

Located on bustling Fulton Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Greenlight Bookstore provides a delightful escape from an ordinary day. Browse the well-stocked shelves as easy-going music plays from above. The store has a good-size children’s section in the back where you can usually find weekly storytimes, making it a great find for families.

5. Books Are Magic 

A brand new addition to the NYC independent bookstore scene, Books Are Magic has a whimsical feel with large arched doors lining its storefront. In the back, a large children’s room carries board books, picture books, and chapter books, and offers a couple of cozy seats, including an octagon-shaped reading nook.
